Petition for Recognition of Beauty Therapist Botox Training

by admin on June 12, 2012

Dear Beauty Therapists,

Thanks for visiting our site.  We appreciate your support.

At the moment in the UK, there are 100’s of beauty therapists administering Botox and other advanced medical aesthetics treatments in unsafe and unhygienic conditions.

We believe that beauty therapists are able to administer Botox and other injectable cosmetic treatments safely, providing they are suitably trained and educated.  Beauty therapists, more than most, know the in-depth the principles required for aesthetic treatments since this is part of our day to day training and work.

We have partnered with leading training providers to give experienced beauty therapists safe and quality training in order to be able to provide timely aesthetic services to your clients while minimising potential side effects and adverse reactions.

We believe the time has come for the government to help promote the regulation of injectables by beauty therapists.  The government has already funded and partnered with the IHAS (Independent Healthcare Advisory Services), an industry-led body which regulates most clinics administering injectable aesthetic treatments.

However, the IHAS discriminates against beauty therapists by purposefully excluding them from eligibility to their organisation.  As stated on the IHAS website, the organisation accepts only doctors, dentists and registered nurses into their quality assurance scheme.

We believe in several key tenets:

  • Beauty therapists, with proper training, are able to administer injectable aesthetic treatments safely.
  • Government regulation is needed in order to guarantee quality assurance.

By joining this petition, you will help join us and send our message to the Department of Health.

  • Allow beauty therapists to join the IHAS quality assurance scheme OR alternatively recognise and fund an alternate body devoted solely to administration of injectable aesthetic treatments by beauty therapists.
  • Officially recognise the right of beauty therapists to administer injectable aesthetic treatments.

By signing this petition, you will help do the following:

  • Improve the quality of injectable treatments provided by beauty therapists to the public.
  • Improve the safety of the public and decrease adverse events.
  • Help reduce insurance premiums for beauty therapists administering Botox.
  • Increase public recognition and acceptance of advanced aesthetic treatment administration by beauty therapists.

No doubt that government regulation is needed. Even experienced beauty therapists need to be properly accredited and trained in this highly specialised field. Not for me though, need more training!

This is a travesty. If any beauty therapist thinks they can inject botox after a one day course they are sadly mistaken.

And what about nurses or dentists? It’s a pretty simple task really, if you’re properly trained under a government prgram should be ok. Especially if working in a doctor’s clinic.

From what I can see from the information on this website, you fail to realise that botox is a prescription only medecine (POM). Legally, ONLY a doctor can prescribe it, and ONLY a trained medical practitioner such as a prescribing nurse, a dentist or a doctor can inject it. Not all nurses or midwives can do this, only those trained properly.

Also, ANYTHING that is injected is a POM, so fillers can also only be injected by these professionals. The Medicines legislation thus makes it illegal for beauty therapists to inject these substances, and that is why they are not allowed to join the Treatments You Can Trust scheme. No one is descriminating against you, they are just following the law. My advice to anyone reading this is DO NOT LET A BEAUTY THERAPIST INJECT YOU WITH ANYTHING, you cannot learn to do this in a one off course. If in doubt, contact your local Council Licensing department.

No arguments. Only doctors can prescribe prescription only medication. However you are wrong in saying that only doctors can inject (please refer to the MHRA guidelines at http://bit.ly/N0txjb

That is exactly what this petition is about. There are lots of beauty therapists and non-medical personnel who are illegally importing and using botulinum toxin in unsafe conditions.

We know beauty therapists must only work hand in hand with prescribers to safely administer Botox, in accordance with the guidelines of the MHRA / Department of Health.

However we believe there should be government sponsored and recognized regulation to ensure high standards and patient safety, similar to and in conjunction with the IHAS.

Thanks for adding your voice Fathiya! Now more than ever we need responsible and experienced beauty therapists like yourself to be heard. Just in the past few days the GMC has banned remote prescribing of Botox, which in itself is a positive move as doctors have been unscrupulously prescribing the medication. What we need is closer co-operation with the medical profession, to bring doctors into our clinics and abide by all legal regulations. However, as is the aim of this petition, we need to government to recognise our right to administer cosmetic treatments such as Botox and to properly regulate this practice.

Please spread the word and encourage others to join our petition!

With the recent changes to the GMC guidelines and the suspension of Dr Mark Harrison, do you still feel this is the right course for beauty therapists to take?
You seem to forget the basic issue that you are injecting a medicine that is off licence for this treatment. Why not go further and suggest that these therapists have a role in travel clinics etc. After all that’s just a small injection and surely if they are trained……..
